The Untold Story of Rogan Art

The Untold Story of Rogan Art

Have you ever seen a painting on fabric that looks like magic? Rogan art is a very special kind of painting from India. It is over 400 years old and is made in a small village called Nirona in Gujarat. But guess what? Artists don’t use a brush to paint it! Instead, they use a tiny metal stick, and the colors are made from special oil.

A long time ago, not many people knew about Rogan art, and it almost disappeared. But some amazing artists worked hard to save it. Now, it is famous all over the world! Let’s learn more about this beautiful art and how it is made.

Where Did Rogan Art Come From?

The word "Rogan" means "oil" in the Persian language. Long ago, people from Persia (now called Iran) brought this art to India. Artists used it to decorate clothes for weddings and to make pretty cloth for homes.

In the past, many families did Rogan painting, and they taught their children how to do it. Today, only a few families still know this art, but they are teaching others so it doesn’t get lost!

How Do Artists Make Rogan Art?

Rogan art is different from other kinds of painting. Let’s see how it is made step by step!

1. Making the paint

The paint in Rogan art is made from a special oil called castor oil. First, the oil is boiled for many hours until it becomes thick and sticky, like jelly. Then, bright colors like red, blue, yellow, and green are mixed in.

2. Painting with a Stick

Instead of using a brush, the artist takes a small metal stick and carefully stretches the thick paint into pretty shapes on the fabric. This needs a lot of patience because the paint is very sticky and tricky to move!

3. Making a Mirror Image

The artist first paints on one side of the cloth. Then, before the paint dries, they fold the fabric to press the design onto the other side. This way, the pattern looks exactly the same on both sides—just like magic!

4. Drying the Fabric

Once the painting is done, the fabric is left to dry. After it dries, it can be used to make dresses, scarves, wall hangings, and even cushion covers.

What Do Rogan Paintings Look Like?

Rogan paintings are very colorful and full of beautiful designs! Some of the most common patterns include:

  • The Tree of Life – A big tree with many branches, showing life and happiness.
  • Flowers and Leaves – Pretty patterns that make the fabric look fresh and bright.
  • Peacocks and Birds – Beautiful birds that bring good luck.
  • Shapes and Patterns – Lines, circles, and fun shapes that look like puzzles!

Every Rogan painting is special because it is made by hand. No two paintings look exactly the same!

How Rogan Art Was Almost Lost

A long time ago, many people made Rogan paintings. But as machines started making cloth faster, fewer people wanted handmade art. Slowly, the number of Rogan artists became very small.

But one family—the Khatri family from Nirona village—did not give up! They kept making Rogan art and teaching others.

Then, in 2014, something amazing happened! India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a beautiful Rogan painting of the Tree of Life to U.S. President Barack Obama as a gift. This made Rogan art famous again!
