After Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita, people started doubting Sita’s purity because she had lived in Lanka. To protect her dignity, Sita decided to leave the palace and went to live in the forest.
There, she stayed at the ashram (hermitage) of Rishi Valmiki, the great sage who wrote the Ramayana.
It was in this peaceful forest that Sita gave birth to two twin boys—Kusha and Lava. They grew up in the ashram, learning scriptures, archery, and the teachings of dharma.
Brave and Talented Princes
Kusha and Lava were not ordinary children. They were very brave, kind, and wise. They learned everything from Rishi Valmiki and were also great singers.
Valmiki taught them the Ramayana, the story of their own father Rama—but they didn’t know Rama was their real father yet!
They sang the Ramayana so beautifully that even the people of Ayodhya wanted to hear it.
When Kusha and Lava Met Rama
One day, Lord Rama heard about two young boys who sang the Ramayana with great devotion and power. He invited them to his palace to sing.
As they sang, Rama listened with tears in his eyes. He slowly began to realize that these boys were telling his own life story, and something in his heart told him—they were his sons.
When he asked about their mother, the truth came out.
Sita, still in the forest, returned only to prove her purity once again. She called upon Mother Earth to take her back, and the ground opened up. Sita disappeared forever.
Rama was heartbroken, but now he had Kusha and Lava—his brave sons.

After Sita returned to Mother Earth, Rama wanted to make sure his sons were taken care of.
He divided his kingdom:
- Kusha was given the eastern part of the empire. He became the king of Kushavati.
- Lava was given the northern part and ruled over Lavapuri (which many believe later became modern-day Lahore in Pakistan).
Both kingdoms were said to be peaceful and full of justice, just like Ayodhya.
The Mystery Begins – What Happened Next?
After this, something strange happened. We don’t hear much more about Kusha and Lava in the popular versions of the Ramayana.

- Why don’t we see their names in later stories?
Some say that their kingdoms were lost in time. Others believe that after Lord Rama left the world, people slowly forgot about Kusha and Lava’s rule.
But ancient texts and legends still mention their cities, their bravery, and how they kept the values of Rama alive.
Signs That Their Kingdoms Existed
- Kushavati: Some say this city was near present-day Chhattisgarh or Uttar Pradesh in India. It was named after Kusha.
- Lavapuri (Lahore): Many people believe that this famous city was founded by Lava. In fact, ancient stories and travelers wrote about this!
Though time passed and dynasties changed, the roots of these cities may still belong to the forgotten sons of Lord Rama.
What We Can Learn
Even though Kusha and Lava’s kingdoms may be lost or hidden, their story teaches us important lessons:
- Bravery and kindness can be passed on from one generation to the next.
- Even if people forget your name, your actions and values remain.
- Family bonds are strong—even when they are broken by time.
Kusha and Lava were the next chapter in the great story of Lord Rama. Though their kingdoms may not shine in history books, they lived with honor and wisdom, just like their father.
