The Forgotten Star of the Big Dipper

The Forgotten Star of the Big Dipper

A Hidden Story from the Sky

Look up at the night sky on a clear night, and you might see a shape that looks like a big spoon. That’s the Big Dipper! It’s one of the most famous star patterns in the sky. But did you know there’s a forgotten star hidden in its story? A star that once shone bright but was left out of most tales?

This is the story of that star—a tiny light with a big secret.

What Is the Big Dipper?

The Big Dipper is a group of seven bright stars. It’s part of a bigger group called Ursa Major, which means "Great Bear" in Latin. The Big Dipper is easy to find because it looks like a scoop or ladle in the sky.

Many cultures have stories about the Big Dipper. Some say it’s a bear, others see it as a wagon or a fish trap. But almost all of them only talk about seven stars.

But wait—there’s an eighth star!

The Hidden Star: Alcor

Right next to one of the stars in the Big Dipper (called Mizar) is a tiny, faint star named Alcor. If you have really sharp eyes—or a pair of binoculars—you can spot it too!

A long time ago, people used the pair Mizar and Alcor as an eye test. If someone could see both stars clearly, they were said to have very good eyesight.

But why don’t people talk about Alcor as much?

The Forgotten One

In many stories and drawings of the Big Dipper, Alcor is left out. It’s not as bright, and it hides in the glow of its big brother, Mizar. So even though it’s up there, twinkling like all the others, it often gets forgotten.

This led to some interesting legends. In Arabic folklore, Alcor was called "The Forgotten One" or "The Neglected Star", a star that didn’t shine brightly enough to earn a place in the main group.

But in some versions of the story, Alcor is very special.

The Watchful Eye

In old tales, Mizar and Alcor weren’t just stars—they were guardians. Mizar was a powerful warrior star, and Alcor was its watchful helper, always keeping an eye on the others in the sky.

Some Native American legends say Alcor was a child or young scout following the older stars. In this version, the Big Dipper is a group of hunters chasing a bear, and Alcor is the eager young one running behind, learning from the grown-ups.

Even though small, Alcor played an important role—it reminded everyone that even the quietest ones have value.

Alcor’s Secret

For a long time, people thought Alcor was just one faint star. But with modern telescopes, scientists discovered something amazing—it’s actually part of a multiple star system! That means Alcor has its own hidden star companion, just like Mizar does.

Together, Mizar and Alcor make one of the coolest “double” star systems in the sky.

So the star that was once forgotten? It turns out it was never really alone.

What Alcor Teaches Us

Alcor’s story is gentle but powerful. It teaches us:

  • Even the smallest voices matter. Just because something (or someone) is quiet doesn’t mean it isn’t important.
  • Being unnoticed doesn’t mean being unworthy. Alcor was always shining—people just needed to look closer.
  • There’s always more than meets the eye. What looks like one tiny star might be a whole hidden system!

Can You Spot Alcor?

Next time you're outside at night, look for the Big Dipper. Find the middle star in the “handle”—that’s Mizar. Look really closely just beside it. Can you see a tiny twinkle next to it? That’s Alcor!

If you spot it, congratulations—you have eagle eyes just like ancient sky watchers!

A Star Worth Remembering

So, while the Big Dipper may always be known for its seven bright stars, there will always be an eighth shining quietly by their side.

Alcor—the forgotten star who never stopped glowing.
