The Battle Between Hanuman and Bhima – When Strength Met Strength

Did you know that Hanuman, the mighty monkey god from the Ramayana, once had a meeting with Bhima, the powerful Pandava prince from the Mahabharata? And not just a meeting – there was even a battle of strength between them!
This story is one of the rare and magical moments where two heroes from two great epics come face to face. Let’s dive into this forgotten tale that is full of fun, power, and a great lesson!
Who Were Hanuman and Bhima?
Before we go to the battle, let’s know our heroes.
Hanuman: The monkey god from the Ramayana. He is strong, wise, and can fly across oceans. He is a great devotee of Lord Rama and played a big role in the war against Ravana. Hanuman has a kind heart and superpowers gifted by the gods.
Bhima: One of the five Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata. He is known for his great strength and bravery. Bhima once fought 100 Kauravas by himself! He loves food, wrestling, and always stands up for his family.
But here’s a surprise—Hanuman and Bhima were actually brothers! Both were sons of the wind god, Vayu. So, this battle was more like a big brother teaching a lesson to the younger one.
The Pandavas’ Journey in the Forest
One day, during their exile in the forest, the Pandavas were tired and hungry. So Draupadi, their wife, asked Bhima to go find a special flower called the Saugandhika, which had a heavenly smell.
Bhima, being brave and strong, agreed immediately and marched deep into the forest, breaking trees and scaring wild animals on the way.
As he walked deeper, he saw a very old monkey lying across the path. The monkey’s long tail was blocking the way. That monkey was none other than Hanuman, disguised to teach Bhima a lesson in humility.
Bhima Meets the Monkey
Bhima said, “Old monkey, move your tail! I have no time to waste.”
The monkey replied softly, “Dear prince, I am old and weak. If you want to pass, please lift my tail and go.”
Bhima, thinking it would be easy, tried to lift the tail. He pulled and pulled—but the tail wouldn’t move! He used all his strength, but still couldn’t even shift it a little!
Bhima was shocked. “Who are you, really?” he asked, breathing hard.
Hanuman Reveals Himself
Smiling, the monkey changed into his true form—it was Hanuman, glowing with divine power!
Bhima bowed his head in respect. “You are my elder brother! Please forgive me.”
Hanuman laughed kindly. “I only wanted to remove your pride, Bhima. You are strong, but never forget—there is always someone greater. Strength should come with humility and kindness.”
Bhima felt shy, but also happy to meet his divine brother. He touched Hanuman’s feet and asked, “Please bless me.”
A Blessing for the War
Before leaving, Hanuman gave Bhima a wonderful blessing. He said, “In the great war of Kurukshetra, I will sit on the flag of your brother Arjuna’s chariot, and my power will protect you all.”
This is why, in the Mahabharata, it is said that Hanuman was present during the war—not by fighting, but by guarding from above.
What This Story Teaches Us
Even though Bhima and Hanuman were both strong and brave, this tale teaches us some beautiful lessons:
- Never be too proud of your strength.
- Respect everyone—young or old, weak or strong.

The battle between Hanuman and Bhima was not about fists and fights. It was about teaching and learning, about respect and humility. And most of all, it was a magical meeting of two mighty brothers—both born from the wind god, both full of strength, and both with hearts of gold.
The next time you read the Ramayana or Mahabharata, remember this secret tale—where the path in a forest became the place for one of the most powerful lessons in both epics!
